Abstract
The aim of the study is to evaluate, from a general nursing perspective, the follow-up nursing care of adult cancer patients discharged from the Windhoek Hospital
The research approach is a descriptive survey. structured and unstructured interviews and questionnaires were used to collect data
The findings revealed that cancer patients are not adequately prepared for discharge, that follow-up nursing care of cancer patients is inadequate, and that patients experience difficulty in regard to the financial aspects of self-care particularly in respect of nutritional, medication and surgical dressing needs
The findings indicate that that there is a need for nurses to be actively involved in the follow-up nursing care of cancer patients, and for a programme of home-care, to be introduced within the parameters of Primary Health Care programmes
