dc.description.abstractThere are challenges faced by the commission in selecting the rightful candidate for the position of the head of administration in local schools. These challenges are observed in poor performing schools and in maladministration of schools leading to suspension or expulsion of headteachers. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the challenges faced by the Teaching Service Commission in the appointment of head teachers in the Hhohho region of Swaziland. A qualitative research approach was used and data collection method used was in the form of a questionnaire and interviews. The research results indicated problems in submission of applications to the Regional Education Officers whose role in recruitment was not clear. The study also showed that candidates were not informed timely prior to interview, an anomaly against the regulated three weeks’ notice in the by-laws of the ministry. It is therefore a recommendation that candidates submit application forms to the Teaching Service Commission, the office responsible for selection and recruitment of both teachers and headteachers. The study further recommends that the Inspectorate be given leading role in shortlisting candidates for the appointment, as they are well trained officers with daily duties undertaken by headteachers.en_US
