Abstract provided by author
The aim of this study is to systematically evaluate the role that Parliamentary committees play in promoting parliamentary democracy in Namibia. The study will thus highlight political, developmental and social impacts committees have in executing their duties. Parliamentary committees play a major role in bringing government closer to the people, through consultative meetings and public hearings. In the same vein the oversight role of committees cannot be over- emphasized, particularly to ensure the executive is kept in check
Parliamentary democracy is best attained by the involvement of the citizenry in core citizens of national issues through rational decision making. Public participation is crucial for strengthening the democratic regime and facilitating negotiated transformation. The study thus far revealed and reaffirmed the imperative for an effective committee system. It will note and acknowledge the positive outcomes of committee work, failures and constraints. Identification of possible remedial action in enhancing parliamentary democracy will be explored
